If we try to trace the roots of Bulgarian culture, we must go back more than a thousand years ago at the dawn of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. The long history of Bulgaria and Bulgarian culture, respectively, begins in 681 with the union of the Thracian, Proto-Bulgarian and Slav tribes who lived in these beautiful fertile lands. Bulgarian culture developed at a fast pace during the flourishing periods in Bulgarian history at the time of the First and the Second Bulgarian kingdom. Today a great number of them are preserved and represent valuable monuments of Bulgarian culture. The main influences on Bulgarian culture came from the neighbouring Byzantine empire and later on, by the Ottoman empire during the five-century Ottoman rule. During this long period of hardship for Bulgarians, they managed to preserve their unique traditions and culture, the monasteries being a major factor as centres of enlightenment and keepers of faith.

Festivals and cultural events in Bulgaria

First festival of the wild flowers in Smolyan

Smolyan municipality will host the first of its kind “Festival of the wild flowers.” The official opening of the festival will be held on June 21st 2013 in Smolyan. The end of the festival is on June 30th 2013. The program of the festival will present various tourism options and attractions in the beautiful mountainous region. Botanic and bike routes through the colourful meadows of the Rhodope mountain, lectures for the healing properties of the local herbs, a well as ateliers for traditional and art crafts will be also a part of the event, inspired by the nature and flowers. Children will be also surprised with interesting entertainment program. During the course of the festival the traditional “Festival of the national craftsmanship and crafts” will be held in Mogilitsa village. There the unique custom “Adrelez”, a dance of the water and flowers, will be performed and the exciting experience is guaranteed.

The residents of Gorna Arda village will present the customs “Enyovden”. The culmination of the festival will be the folklore singing competition Izvoren glas in Smolyan. The festival of wild flowers is a part of the project “Rhodopes – the garden of Orpheus” which aims to preserve the unique flora in the region and promote the beautiful nature as an important tourist resource. The festival is a part of the network of festivals for wild flowers that also take place in Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and UK under the auspices of PlantLife International. The program of the festival includes botanical tours, lectures and lessons that present the use of local herbs, as well as the traditional arts and crafts, the diversity of the folklore in Smolyan region.
